KAH-ROE-SHI 'SHI' cd released by 13 local DIY labels!

FAQ#69: Whats up with Kah-Roe-Shi lately?

We had no choice than to take some sweet time working on the collaboration with Fall To Their Death and split LP/CD with Trigger Mortis. Perhaps you will see a new line of limited merchs along the way. But that would have to wait for our official artist Revan and Morgan coming back from their tour with the greencore gods, Raja Singa. Anyway, Embrace distro just put a new batch of KRS's Dejavu Beirut tshirts if you hate to wait. Our website is not updated as we might change the whole layout later, but you could always check out our active blog here. We have a number of Shi cds that we would like to donate or sell at a very cheap wholesale price for local collective and label/distro, please get in touch. No, we dont have any upcoming gigs yet, DIY organizers dont hesitate on trying to book us.

Should any label/distro/collective/gig organizers/you need to contact us: unionofslaves@gmail.com / 013 2497199 (Kid).

Crux's SE Asia (Malaysian leg) tour report featured in Maximum Rock n Roll #307

"Our Malaysian shows all had pretty varied line-ups and definitely featured some of the best bands of the tour. Getting to play with Carburetor Dung in Penang was a great honour, as they have been playing since the early 90's, and are seen by many as the forefathers of punk in Malaysia. That particular show was full of skinheads - something I certainly didnt expect to see here in Asia, but I was told that while there had been problems with racist-skins in the past (so called brown-power skins), this particular group was the anti-fascist variety (a good thing for us in view of our Vietnamese-born vocalist). My favorite band in Malaysia (and perhaps of the whole tour) was Kah-Roe-Shi, who pounded out some heavy-as-fukk hardcore sludge in the vein of His Hero Is Gone. Other awesome bands included: Infinite Delay (Discordance Axis-style grind), Daghila (fast, heavy, screamo) and Blood On Wedding Dress (power violence/thrash)."

- by Lex (Crux's bassist)

We would recommend you buying MRR's issue December 2008 to read the whole report of their tour.

Apart from the more known underground music scene in Sabah, we rarely heard anything from Sarawak. I only knew few bands like Kurasakuasa (Mass Separation played a gig with them years ago), Restart and of course the defunct Buddy Holly zine, Fist of Fury (RIP, now The Times?) and who can forget Sputum (grindcore used to be cooler than indie). And suddenly Kuching, Sarawak now is in the DIY bands touring circuit! Check out their community blog run by Yuen and his friends. 'Midin' distro anyone?http://borneodiyhcpunk.wordpress.com/

Oh, ya don't forget to google what 'Midin' means. Conquest for obscure punks!

Kah-Roe-Shi 'Shi' CD review on Bebal #4

Kah-Roe-Shi/Pazahora split 7" review on Punk Ping Pong #2

KAH-ROE-SHI is a new Malaysian band that plays heavy down tuned sludge crustcore with a mixture of NEUROSIS, FROM ASHES RISE. There are also 3 songs that also appear on the full length 'SHI' cd. I'm dying to listen to the acoustic intro of RACE DON'T EXIST song. It is really good before starting the song. PAZAHORA is from Singapore. Pazahora also has a good sing-a-long intro. They has a good song structure and a good vocals part but their song structure is not going top notch to blow my speaker. I do not hate their sound production, it's not bad but I'm just wondering if a good band like PAZAHORA can utilize a great sound to take a big impact in their songs. Taking influence from TRAGEDY, FROM ASHES RISE. PAZAHORA is good in doing their job. Anyway, both bands are my favorite bands rite now.
Kah-Roe-Shi 'Shi' CD review on Punk Ping Pong #2

Formally known as UNION OF SLAVES, KAH-ROE-SHI is another Malaysian band that is active nowadays. 7 tracks of heavy hardcore crust a la HIS HERO IS GONE, FROM ASHES RISE, KYLESA and the ilk. The sound production is very good. Not much band really care about their sound production. This kind of music must come with a very heavy and clean sound. I mean very detailed from their guttural vocals to the acoustic intro. I like this cd a lot. Oops..This cd also contains 13 minutes of live video of live video from the band. It's good to use an extra space on cd rather than let it be blank. NOTABLE TRACK - RACE DON'T EXIST. There are more than 10 label co-released this CD. Anyway, I just list one the labels - Bullwhip Records.

KAH-ROE-SHI - "Shi" CD
I have heard these guys on a few of their previous releases and have been very impressed by their variety of darkened crust. This full length did not disappoint. It certainly threw me off with the packaging being a mini burlap sack with their name written in Kanji characters. Admittedly, it took me a couple minutes to figure out this was the killer band from Malaysia KAH-ROE-SHI! Dark, heavy and thick crust-core with clear nods to FROM ASHES RISE and HIS HERO IS GONE. The lyrics of this band are especially good with lots of information and details in the booklet. A 13-label Malaysian collaboration. Great! (NM) - Reviewed by Nick Mangel on Maximum Rock n Roll #306 / Nov '08.

After patiently waited for 2 months, 'Shi' cd finally got reviewed on MRR #306. 'Shi' cd also listed as one of the Nick Mangel's top 10 records of the month. Thanks for the support Nick, we really appreciate it!

We're still starstrucked from the almost What Happens Next set! We're also glad that Conquest for Death turned out to be very friendly as well, thanks for covering those WHN hits and CFD cds! We also got to know that our Dave (Straight Jacket Nation, Pisschrist from Melbourne, Australia) were filling in for Alex during this CFD tour, how nice it feels to meet an old friend again.

This time our set took a bit longer than usual, being stopped twice due to our gadget power failure, we also played more songs (2 new songs and a WHN cover, which we had Devon himself singing along).
Thanks to Third Arm for inviting us to play the CFD KL leg and their compilation cd release party. And another huge thanks to Niesa Assault for all her efforts, we managed to use our x-ray light props (human skulls with some dark room effects)!

But apart from being our happiest moment, Third Arm had to bare RM800 loss because of the low attendants of paying crowd. Somehow expected. However, we hope everyone in the DIY scene to take this as something positive at least, to realize that we all really need to push ourselves harder, to support each other DIY projects and not to waste much time worrying about the scene politic mongers!

Conquest For Death (US) is coming down to KL this Sunday and we're really fortunate to get a gig with them. We gonna cover 'Museifu Shugi Banzai' from their old but still inspiring band, 'What Happens Next?', which we believe is everyone's favorite number too. Here goes the lyrics to refresh your bandana-thrashcore memories!

PAZAHORA/KAH-ROE-SHI split 7" (Dis.eased) review on Attack online zine.

Pazahora from Singapore have gotten my blood pumping before, and does so this time as well. Dark, hard, and melodic crustcore with some obvious references to Tragedy, but also stuff that reminds me more of Swedish bands like Personkrets 3:1 for instance. In other words, pretty much the same stuff as found on their CD from 2007 and that's just what I wanted. They have the heaviness, they have the catchiness, they have the well thought out riffs, and they have me digging like a madman. Excellent stuff and far better than many of their European and American counterparts. If I were to complain about anything it would be that the sound is a bit muddy, but as it's not crap I can live with it and the music is good enough to help me overcome this anyway. On the flip we have Kah-Roe-Shi from Malaysia which is a slightly more unpredictable bunch, showing their skills in everything from spastic powerviolence to sludge - all rolled into one. It's loud, violent, and twitchy… and I'm torn. I can't argue with the fact that this heavy as hell and really powerful and even remind me of His Hero Is Gone every now and then, but there's just something about it that I'm not in love with. I guess there are a few too many tempo changes in a too short period of time and it can seem a bit too schizophrenic. But still, Kah-Roe-Shi are good and Pazahora are great so this is a definite buy.
[Krogh - July 31, 2008 / www.attackfanzine.net/index.php?page=Reviews]

Thanks Krogh for noticing our musical direction or should I say intention. We no longer have copies of the split 7". However you might want to try asking Dis.eased Records or Epidemic Distro.
It feels good to found out that we 'failed' again to fall under the dark crust regime. Kid

SHI cds also available from Profane Existence

KAH-ROE-SHI are a pummeling hardcore / crust band from Malaysia and have just released their first full length CD with the help of 13 local DIY labels. The name directly translated (from Japanese) means "Death from Overwork" and their lyrics (all in English) speak of breaking out of the shallow existence of modern life. Musically this is pure brutality and nestles somewhere between DYSTOPIA and HIS HERO IS GONE. This is a professionally pressed CD, comes with a nice-looking booklet of lyrics and other writing, and is packaged in a screen-printed CD-sized cloth sack. Very nice. The recently did a split EP with Singapore crust punks PAZAHORA who are another top notch and highly recommended band from SE Asia.

Punk Ping Ponk zine (by Pat of Apparatus) interview with Kah-Roe-Shi.

WHY DID YOU GUYS CHANGE THE NAME FROM 'UNION OF SLAVE' TO 'KAH-ROE-SHI'?? WHAT THE HELL DOES IT MEAN AND WHY???
Union of Slaves appeared on the flyer for our first show back in Penang,August 2006. But right after that, we started using Kah-Roe-Shi as wewanted something that strongly reflects our love and hate relationship with the wage-slave’s life and hopefully something more unique and not overused. Ka = excess, Ro = labor, Shi = death, translated literally from the Japanese as "death from overwork" or occupational sudden death. However, the name Union of Slaves also came from the same idea.

YOU GUYS JUST RELEASED A SPLIT 7" WITH PAZAHORA. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THEM?? ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE RELEASE??
We’re honored to be on the split 7" with Pazahora (melodic moderncrust) thats being released on Epidemic Distro, both band and label are also our good friends from Singapore. We’re also glad to have Diseased Records from US co-releasing the split 7".Pazahora/Crux (brutal dark crust, Sydney) split cd already out on Tenzenmen Records and Cactus Distro. Epidemic Distro runs by a reliable long time friend had put out quite a number of good releases, I heard they’re working on Osmantikos/Distrust, Osmantikos is one of the very few crust bands that still active. And Diseased Records just put out Homicide/MC Homeless LP, Homicide is a radical hip hop group from Bandung, Indonesia.
We’re actually quite satisfied with that split 7", it’s one of the best thing ever happened for us. We hope to do better with future releases.

I REALLY LIKE THE SONG 'RACE DON'T EXIST'. REALLY KICKS ASS AND THE SOUNDS ARE BETTER THAN THE CD THAT I GOT. WAS IT IN THE SAME RECORDING SESSION??? IF THERE IS NO RACE, DO YOU THINK OUR LIFE IS EASIER? I MEAN
THERE'S NO BIAS BETWEEN THE RACES IN OUR SOCIETY.
Technically it’s the same recording, but we remixed them again at Standing Wave, Subang Jaya. Race has been one of the main excuses for humans having war, discrimination, injustice, inequality, irony and hypocrisy. Not that we’re saying that life will be easier but do we really need to have all these races? Humans are tending to be scared and skeptical instead of embracing each other differences.

HOW LONG DID YOU GUYS SPEND YOUR TIME IN THE STUDIO FOR THE RECORDING? IS THERE ANY SUITABLE SOUND ENGINEER WHO UNDERSTANDS FOR PUNK/HC BAND IN KL?
The recording and mixing were done within 1 month plus. Sounds engineer-wise I would recommend Standing Wave’s engineer Meng. For practice we like it at Studio Shop Space, Wangsa Maju. Sooner or later Studio Shop Space gonna have their own recording tools. DIY hardcore punk kids ran this place, so that should be very good news.

I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE FROM DIFFERENT BANDS THAT ARE ACTIVE IN THIS SCENE NOWADAYS. SO, WHOSE IDEA TO FORM 'KAH-ROE-SHI'? WHICH BAND IS IN TOP PRIORITY??
Fahmi and me are now in Mass Separation (thrash grind). Tiong is in Tools of The Trade (death grind) and Zul is in Akta Angkasa (experimental). I got hooked up with bands like Counterblast and Dystopia back in the 90’s but its only sometime around 2006, Fahmi and me decided to form a band that sounds a bit different from bands that we’re already in. We went ahead asking Zul from Tim Yohannon knowing him into experimental music, a very passionate drummer and still a punk rocker like us. Tiong from Tools of The Trade and Reconstruct came in later as we wanted Kah-Roe-Shi to sounds punk but at the same time experimenting with punishing sludge parts. This is not something popular here, its even hard for us not only the crowd. I’m giving the same priorities for both of my bands and I believe the others feels the same way. Tiong used to live 300km away from us and we only practice once a month before but we managed to put out 3 releases.

THERE'S A SLUDGING AND CRUST TYPE IN YOUR SONGS. WHAT'S YOUR INFLUENCE ACTUALLY?? ANYTHING BESIDES PUNK/CRUST STUFF??
Other than punk/crust, I would say sludge, post metal, industrial and experimental. We’re actually still trying hard to develop our own style and we’re still far from what we actually wanted to do. Anyway our all-time favorite bands are like Counterblast, His Hero Is Gone, Dystopia and peers.

WE ARE LACK OF PLACE TO ORGANIZE GIGS OR SHOWS TODAY RITE. MAYBE THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THE RENTAL AND SOMETIMES I FEEL IT'S ABOUT CROWD MANNERS TOO. DO YOU THINK THAT WE MUST COLLECTIVELY RENT SOME PLACE AND DO IT LEGALLY INCLUDING PAYING TAXES, LICENCE, ETC??? DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM OR ARE WE THE PROBLEM??
Venues are always a big headache. Expensive rental, remote location, getting permits from local authorities is already a classic! To have a space of our own like practice studio or art space could be the alternative to ease this problem. But practice studio and art space still needs to be self-sustained and that would require a lot of time, efforts and of course money. But this should be not something that we couldn’t work out, providing if we gonna work together with dedicated people.

IS VINYL A COLLECTIBLE THING, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT CASSETTE?? DO YOU HAVE ANY RARE CASSETTE COLLECTION?? CAN YOU LET US KNOW??
As just about anything could be a collectible, vinyl obsessive consumption also could be a destructive habit. We’re totally cool with cassettes, all of us got to know hardcore punk by collecting cassettes. Music on cassettes and vinyl has this warmth feeling that digital release couldn’t pull off. Zul is the cassette-person in our band. He has the most extensive collection of cassettes. He sure got a lot of notable ones! Most of his collection can be seen at Studio Shop Space, a practice studio, record listening and zine reading space. I got no working cd or cassette player for the time being so I listen to records (vinyl) whenever I feel like it. However I still got quite an amount of cassettes laying around in my room. I used to collect a lot of cassettes (a lot demos) through tapes trading but not so many survived from the late 90’s period (this time I moved around a lot).

IN INTERNATIONAL PUNK SCENE, MOST PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN VINYL THAN CASSETTE. I THINK THIS 2 ANALOG SHITS ARE BETTER IF COMPARED WITH CD, BUT IT SEEMS THAT CASSETTES ARE LOSING VALUE. IT'S LIKE YOU ARE GETTING
MORE ATTENTION IF YOUR BAND HAS VINYL RELEASE THAN CASSETTE OR CDS. DO YOU AGREE?
Yes, it’s a huge thing if your band got released on vinyl because that also means you got distributed overseas. While bands in developed countries think its really cool to have re-releases because they also got released in less developed countries. It’s the same appreciation! Yes, we couldn’t help to agree that sound-wise, vinyl sounds way much better and last longer, but we don’t mind any formats release-wise. Which ever make sense, its very important that our releases to be accessible and affordable!

OKAY, THIS IS A VERY COMMON QUESTION THAT I ALWAYS ASK. WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT ASIAN HC/PUNK SCENE, THEY ONLY KNOW ABOUT JAPAN. YEAH, JAPAN HAS A GOOD PUNK HISTORY BUT THERE ARE STILL MANY GREAT BANDS DOWN HERE. DO YOU THINK SOUTH-EAST ASIA PUNK SCENE IS FACING DOUBLE STANDARD IN THE INTERNATIONAL LEVEL?? OR THERE'S NO GOOD BAND AROUND US?? ANY FAVOURITE/RECOMMENDED BAND FROM SOUTH-EAST ASIA??
The attention the Japanese scene is getting maybe seems kinda overrated to some people but its totally understandable, they got a long history and tons of goodies keeps coming from there. We wouldn’t see it as a double standard but maybe its our own DIY scene thats not strong and self-sustained yet. We rather take it as a positive challenge to improve our local DIY scene. Some of the South East Asian bands (active at the moment) that we like, Malaysia- Fall To Their Death (sludge), Daighila (emo-violence), Indonesia- Hellowar (crust), Raja Singa (grindcore), Philippines – Choke Cocoi (hardcore), Killratio (crust) and Singapore – Pazahora (crust), Magnicide (grindcore).

DO YOU HAVE ANY PLAN TO TOUR EUROPE??? WHAT'S YOUR UPCOMING PROJECT??
Europe Union (EU) just passed a new stricter bill against immigration (despite many critics), we hope its not gonna making it harder for touring bands and travelling friends. However, we don’t have any concrete plan to tour again yet. Right now, we’re trying hard to get the band back on track and write more songs. We’re now writing new materials for a split with Fall To Their Death (sludge/post metal) and a possible split LP with a political hip hop band.

OKAY, THANKS FOR ANSWERING MY SHITTY QUESTIONS. I'M SORRY FOR THAT. ANYWAY, I LET YOU ASK ME A QUESTION ……HAHAHHA….
So Pat, when is the split with Apparatus? Thanks for sparing us some space. Write to us at unionofslaves@gmail.com. Or you also can write to me, Kid personally at propamedia@gmail.com. Agitate!

The Crux’s show turned to be one of the best studio shows ever i ever been to. Awakening was crammed with kids from all over, new and old friends.and some even from outside KL!

Tight bands, free food & drinks and a birthday party for anna (Crux’s vocalist) too! despite some dramas going on (before the show, even during pazahora’s set), we still managed to pull off a memorable one, fuh! Crux were really worth it.

On behalf of myself, Kah-roe-shi and Crux,
I would like to thanks to everyone involved; Cellulite, Klitbeat, Zeezam, Talib, Nobeat (financing the show), friends at Studio Shop Space Saloon (food, accommodation, transportation), Khalil (sweet brownies), all the bands, friends that came and making it happened!

'They were not only firm and utterly tight but they had fukking amazing compositions in their set-list. There were so many different influences in there, and they verved and twisted around the changes with effortless zeal. I was totally overawed by the more sinister and crushing Wagnerian feel in most parts of their tunes. Some slower, dirgy parts got me thinking of Streetcleaner-era Godflesh! That’s the digital delay on the guitar while being overdriven through a typical one cab Marshall amp. I wonder how would it sound with a complete tubed stack!' - Ricecooker zine's review on Crux live set.

ps: Oh ya, if you didn't get to know about the venue changed back to Awakening. Sorry!

Kah-Roe-Shi – 'Shi' CD

Obviously the format is taken from the footsteps of HHIG and the
likes. Really inspiring and passionate from start to finish. One of the current most 'talked-about' bands to come out here in Southeast Asia and this unit did not disappoint. A follow up on their split with Pazahora and includes a total of 7 tracks with a 13 minute live video footage. I just learned that they came out around 2006 on a different name that is Union Of Slaves however changing this into their current which literally means "death from overwork" in Japanese. Somehow the name says it all, their stand, politics and what they're meant to be as a group. Lyrics are political in nature focusing on of course wage slavery, racism, awareness, freedom of the press and shit – you know the drill. What I really like about it is that it has sort of explanation / article on each song or lyrics which throws details for the listener to comprehend much easily and effective. The packaging is unique in a way in which the disc and the booklet are packed in a cloth showing the band's logo. Reminds me on the way screamo bands do
their stuff in the '90s. Though the lyrics are somewhat serious in its way of screaming out its message, you can still somehow sit back and enjoy its furious attack and intense music all throughout. Malaysia, represent. - Dane

'Shi' cds is available at where ever you saw this flyer! For the time being its available at the Ricecooker shop (Annexe, Central Market) and Studio Shop Space (Wangsa Maju). We'll look out for more mom and pop's independent record stores/alternative spaces for your convenience getting our cds. But sorry, not the Tower Records for sure!

11 June 2008

Again, we've to change the venue for Crux's show!
Annexe, Awakening and now moved to Noisy! We cant get hold of MCPA and One Cafe for sure, they're fully booked plus its too expensive. Noisy anyway is a new and smaller venue and hopefully cooler management. Although its better than nothing for the time being, but this venue issue is not something we could take lightly in future.

PAZAHORA / KAH ROE SHI split-EP (Singapore/Malaysia) 3,50

Very good split-EP of two great hardcore/crust/punk bands. Pazahora with emotional crust and Kah Roe Shi with screamo influence crusty hardcore. Nice artwork!

Kah-Roe-Shi/Pazahora split 7" reviewed by MRR -

I had never heard of these bands before and this was an interesting introduction. Very cool layout, awesome artwork that’s hard not to notice. PAZAHORA, from Singapore, plays fairly straight up crustcore with some old grind influences and has pretty ripping male/female vocals. At times they remind me of DISRUPT and DESTROY. KAH-ROE-SHI is much heavier and denser, and has melodic elements but falls in the dark crust category to my ears, which is awesome because I love it! KAH-ROE-SHI is from Malaysia. Awesome split release on Singapore and American labels! Only 100 copies in the US, so act fast! (NM) - MRR #301

What is Profane Existence?

The Profane Existence Collective was formed in 1989 by a small group of young people with the common goal of contributing to build a stronger and more politically active punk rock movement. As a collective, we are a small group of individuals that have joined together our ideas and abilities to work on numerous projects as part of a single entity, in an overall struggle against tyranny and oppression. Everyone likes to pigeonhole and this is how we prefer to look at ourselves: Our politics are anti-state and anti-oppression (anarchist if you prefer) and our community is from within the DIY ("Do It Yourself") punk rock movement

Profane Existence Magazine

The most visible aspect of our work is the magazine "Profane Existence" which we have published over 40 issues since the collective first came together. The goal of our magazine is to spread communication of ideas and information, as well as help build a tighter, more politically active movement on an international level. The magazine is distributed worldwide through punk and underground channels, with a circulation of over 20,000 copies per issue, and is enjoyed not only by punks, but other people who are looking for alternative sources of news and information.

ANNEXE NO MORE?
I know many of you are wondering about what gonna happen with the shows at the annexe. Sorry for going off on this tour without settling the matter. It was quite a hectic time all of us. But i will try to save all the shows booked when I get back. Sabar ya! - Joe & The Dung.

This is latest hit we got regarding our 'suddenly-uncertain' next gig aka cd/7" release party at the 'used to be a democratic space' Annexe, Central Market this Wesak Day@Monday, 19/05. However if Joe Kidd couldnt work it out with the management, Cellulite Records might settled with Noisy Studio in Ampang.

A bummer we know! But I guess what doesnt kill us only gonna makes us stronger. But we're really worried about Ricecooker and Bau-Bau Cafe (runs by Food Not Bombs volunteers). What will the future holds for them?

- Kid Useless
ps; Now we're looking for a new venue for Crux, Cut Sick, Margrudergrind, Conquest For Death and KLFemme Fest, you got any ideas?
